You can imagine how excited we were when we found out that beauty expert, Nadine Baggott, journalist, TV presenter and beauty editor of Hello Magazine, had included Bodyvie in her popular You Tube Channel, aptly named The Beauty Know It All. Nadine is so impressed with how we have managed to help her big sister, Karen, cure her rosacea that she mentions us here

In the above video, Nadine and Karen talk about how Bodyvie used Intense Pulse Light therapy (IPL) to beat her rosacea. It didn’t happen overnight – Karen had 8 treatments to get her skin clear and healthy and maintains it with a yearly top up of one or two further IPL treatments.

What Causes Rosacea?

Experts believe that genetics play a part in rosacea as well as maybe blood vessel abnormalities. But whatever the cause, there are certain triggers that definitely exacerbate the problem.

Below are the culprits that induce redness and Karen stays clear of these to ensure her sensitive skin stays calm…

  • Extremes in temperature: whether that is in the home or the water temperature of you showers or bath. Keep a balanced temperature to help prevent breakouts.
  • Hot drinks and spicy foods: Karen noticed that hot drinks (especially alcoholic drinks such as mulled wine) and spicy foods aggravated her rosacea, so she limits these.
  • Sunbathing: As with ensuring your bath water or room is of an even temperature, it’s important not to allow the skin to overheat in the sun. The ultraviolet rays will cause more damage to sensitive skin and even if you feel that getting a tan will cover up the redness, it actually makes it worse in the long run, so FAKE don’t BAKE!
  • Harsh skincare: Over use of skincare with powerful anti-ageing ingredients such as AHAs and BHAs, retinols and chemical exfoliants caused Karen’s skin to flare-up. Nowadays she keeps things simple with products containing gentle, natural ingredients and she avoids anything scented too.

NB A bonus of IPL is that as well as dealing with rosacea, it is great for improving skin texture and improving various signs of ageing, so where Karen may have felt she missed out by having to boycott certain anti-ageing skincare that didn’t suit her sensitive skin, she made up with the complexion rejuvenating results of IPL.

  • Alcohol: This is another no-no which can cause the nose and cheeks to flush and red wine is often the worse choice.
  • Menopause: This can be a prime time for inducing rosacea as the skin goes through many hormonal changes and hot flushes may provoke symptoms.
