Dermal filler dissolving is £225 per session, including your consultation. Assessed and carried out by one of our doctors at Richmond or Belgravia.
Hyaluronic acid dermal filler can be broken down and removed. It is a medical procedure, carried out at Bodyvie by one of our doctors following a consultation and assessment.
Why patients ask for filler to be removed
- Too much filler has been placed, or the result looks heavier than intended
- Filler has moved from where it was originally placed
- Lumps, firmness or asymmetry that have not settled
- Persistent swelling, particularly around the eyes
- Filler placed elsewhere that the patient is unhappy with
- A wish to start again before any further treatment
It is also used urgently in the management of a vascular complication, where filler has affected the blood supply to an area of tissue. This is uncommon but it is a medical emergency, and it is one of the reasons filler should be placed by a clinician who is equipped to treat the complications.
What the treatment involves
The treatment takes around 30 minutes. It is a series of small injections into the areas where filler is present. The medicine used is prescription-only, so it must be prescribed for you personally by a doctor after a face-to-face assessment. It cannot be booked online or supplied without that consultation.
Results are not immediate in every case. Some of the change is visible within a day or two, and the full effect is usually judged at around two weeks. More than one session is sometimes needed, particularly where a large volume has been placed or the filler has been in place for a long time.
Important: it does not work on every filler
Only hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved this way. Permanent and semi-permanent materials, and products such as collagen biostimulators, cannot be broken down by it and need a different approach.
If you do not know what was used, or the treatment was carried out elsewhere and you have no record of it, that matters. From late 2026, ultrasound scanning for retained dermal filler will be available at our Richmond premises through The Ultrasound Practice, an independent imaging provider. A scan can show where deposits sit and how deep they are, which is useful information to bring to a consultation, although it cannot identify which product was used.
Risks
- Allergic reaction. This is the most significant risk. Serious reactions are rare but can be severe, which is why treatment is carried out in a clinical setting by a doctor
- Swelling, redness, bruising and tenderness at the injection sites, usually settling within a few days
- Loss of volume in the treated area, which is the intended effect but can look more pronounced than expected at first
- A temporary effect on the body’s own hyaluronic acid in the treated area
- An uneven result, or incomplete removal, requiring a further session
- The original concern that led to the filler being placed will return
Your doctor will take a full history, discuss any previous reactions and explain what is appropriate in your case before proceeding.
Before and after
You will be asked what filler you have had, when, where and by whom, as far as you know. If you are not certain, bring whatever records you have.
Afterwards, avoid make-up on the treated area for the rest of the day, avoid exercise, heat and alcohol for 24 hours, and expect the area to look swollen initially. If you are planning further filler, your doctor will advise how long to wait, which is usually at least two weeks.
