A lower limb arterial duplex ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves to see the arteries that carry blood to the legs. This test is used to locate blockages in the leg arteries and grades the severity of these blockages.

Our Specialist Vascular Sonographer administers an arterial duplex ultrasound procedure to look inside the arteries in the legs. Using high-frequency sound waves, we can create a colour map of the leg arteries to identify and diagnose various conditions, such as:

  • Narrowing of the blood vessels and blocked arteries (that may be causing leg pain when walking)
  • Resting leg pain
  • Poor circulation
  • Foot, ankle, heel or toe ulcers
  • Skin discolouration
  • Aneurysms

The sonographer will record the quality of blood flow in your lower limbs to assess the extent of the narrowing of the arteries in given areas. Your results will be available right away after the scan.

As it is a non-invasive scan, there is no recovery time, and you do not have to do anything to prepare before your appointment.

Should your sonographer identify abnormalities, they may refer you for treatment or suggest lifestyle changes you can make to improve and manage your condition.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What can I expect from an arterial duplex scan?

Once you are comfortable, a gel is applied to your legs, and an ultrasound probe is used to examine your arteries.

Blood pressure readings will be taken of your ankles throughout the scan; you will be able to hear the ‘swooshing’ sound of the ultrasound. These sounds alert your clinician to where your blood flow is abnormal.

There is no discomfort associated with the procedure.

What is arterial duplex scanning for the lower extremity for?

Your doctor may refer you for an arterial duplex scan if they believe you could be living with problems such as:

  • A blood clot
  • Widening of the main artery in your abdomen (abdominal aortic aneurysm).
  • Blockage to an artery
  • Varicose veins
  • Problems with the blood vessels that supply flow to your kidneys
  • Inflammation of the joints and muscles in your legs

You may also be referred for an arterial duplex ultrasound if your clinician wishes to see if a procedure or lifestyle change to restore blood flow has been successful.

How long does an arterial duplex take?

The scan can take between 30 and 60 minutes to complete. The process may take a little longer if your sonographer requires you to exercise at various intervals during the scan.
