Our Consultant Musculoskeletal Radiologist offers musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injections for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to assess and treat different musculoskeletal problems that can affect joints, tendons, ligaments & muscles.

A gentleman in a white vest laying on a hospital bed while the sonographer in blue scrubs uses ultrasound device to guide him to inject in the muscle.

In addition to therapeutic interventions, MSK ultrasound offers a specific real-time diagnostic visualisation that cannot be recreated with an X-ray, CT, or MRI.

Bodyvie’s MSK ultrasound and ultrasound-guided injection clinic makes access to pain-relieving injections as easy as possible for patients whilst offering the highest levels of expertise and patient care.

MSK injections are usually recommended when the anatomical location is incredibly small, surrounded by sensitive structures (such as major blood vessels or nerves), or deep under the skin’s surface. Examples of these locations could include the small joints of the hands and feet or deep structures, such as the hip joint.

The benefit of an MSK injection, much like other ultrasounds, is that it does not expose you to radiation and is the safest and quickest way to administer guided injections.

The procedure

An ultrasound probe is placed lightly on the skin, and ultrasound gel is then used between the probe and the skin, allowing the ultrasound waves to depict an image of the joints/tendon/ligament/muscle and more below the surface of the skin.

Once a clear picture has been visualised, a needle is entered through the skin and is cautiously guided by the live images on the screen.

Very little preparation is needed for an MSK injection. Please inform your healthcare professional if you are allergic to any medications or gels or are on blood thinners. You may need to have your MSK injection deferred or your INR checked before injecting large weight-bearing joints (such as your knee or ankle). You are welcome to eat and drink as normal before an MSK  injection.
