A blood test that measures the level of the hormone Oestradiol (also known as Estradiol or E2) in the bloodstream. Out of the four types of the hormone Oestrogen, produced mainly by the ovaries, Oestradiol is the most important. It is a vital role in sexual development.

Oestradiol is an oestrogen steroid hormone and the major female sex hormone. In sexually mature females, Oestradiol is produced mainly by the ovaries, and in smaller amounts by the adrenal glands, however, the placenta, testes, adrenal glands, and some tissues also produce small amounts of Oestradiol.

Having the correct amount of Oestrogen is essential for reproductive health. Elevated or low levels of Oestrogen can result in medical problems, such as weak bones, infections, depression and more. While oestrogen is known as a female sex hormone, it also plays a role in male development.

Elevated or decreased levels of Oestradiol can influence how parts of the body work, such as the womb, vagina, fallopian tubes, breast, libido, sperm cells and erectile function.

The highest level of Oestradiol is usually seen during a women’s reproductive years, this drops significantly after menopause.

Abnormal levels of Oestradiol can result in:

  • Infertility
  • Menstrual problems
  • Symptoms of the transition to menopause
  • Gynecomastia or benign swelling of the male breast tissue
  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian tumours

What can an Oestradiol blood test help determine?

An Oestradiol blood test can also detect early or late puberty in children and teens. Your healthcare professional may refer you or your child for an Oestradiol blood test should any early/late puberty symptoms be apparent.

These blood tests may also be used for regular monitoring of Oestradiol levels in transgender women.

The Testing Process

An oestradiol blood test is a very simple procedure. Much like a normal blood test, your health care professional will take a sample of your blood and collect it with a test tube or vial. There are no preparations needed for the test and the process usually takes around 5 minutes.
