Chalazion, also known as Meibomian cyst, appear as lumps on the eyelid and are caused by the blockage and inflammation of an oil gland in the eyelid. The lump on the eyelid is filled with fluid and can feel soft or firm. A chalazion usually resolves on their own but may need medical intervention.

Chalazion lumps on the eyelid is a common condition. It is benign, easily recognised, diagnosed and treated.

A chalazion is a lump or swelling on the eyelid and is usually painless. These lumps on the eyelid are caused by blocked oil glands, similar to the cause of small cysts. The blocked glands usually produce moisture for the eyes. Each eyelid contains over 25 oil-secreting ducts which open into the eyelid margin and secrete oil. If just one of the ducts gets blocked, oil accumulates and may cause a painful, inflamed lump.

People with inflammatory conditions like seborrhea, acne, rosacea, chronic blepharitis, or long-term inflammation of the eyelid are more at risk for developing chalazia. Chalazia can be confused for styes but they are different. Styes are painful and chalazia are not. A chalazion often goes away on its own within two to eight weeks. However, if you’ve had one for several months or if it’s starting to interfere with your vision, your doctor may recommend surgical Chalazion removal.

Chalazia can also develop in size which may interfere with vision, they may also appear red which may indicate an infection and should be looked at by a doctor.

Our medical director, Dr Weber will assess the lump on your eyelid to determine if it is a chalazion. During your consultation, our doctors will discuss what the treatment of removing the chalazion involves, as well as detailing pre and post-treatment care to guarantee a safe and comfortable treatment.

You may be prescribed antibiotics, other medication and in some cases steroid ointment to aid in a comfortable and efficient recovery. The antibiotics will keep the site from becoming infected and steroids can help treat any inflammation you experience after the procedure.

You will then book your appointment with our lovely reception team to best suit your schedule. Dr Weber’s experience ensures minimal scarring and minimal downtime. Chalazion removal is quick and you can return to your normal activities on the same day as your procedure.
