Our kidney function blood tests involve evaluating your levels of urea and electrolytes to see how well your kidneys are working. The test provides essential information on your renal function, and its clinical value lies in the diagnosis and management of acute kidney injury and disease.
Kidney function blood tests assess your renal function, particularly excretion and homeostasis. Your urea and electrolyte levels are evaluated to see how well your kidneys function. They provide helpful information about several aspects of health, such as blood volume and pH.
The test measures glomerular filtration rate (GFR), which assesses how efficiently your kidneys clear waste from your system – GFR is commonly referred to as the gold standard marker of kidney health.
Kidney function blood tests are vital in diagnosing and managing chronic kidney disease and acute kidney injury, which, if not treated, could lead to cardiovascular disease (such as myocardial infarction and strokes) or thrombosis.
Our kidney function blood tests are also referred to as ‘renal function tests with electrolytes’, and they are conducted to measure dissolved salts (electrolytes). The electrolytes routinely measured include sodium, chloride, potassium and bicarbonate.
Abnormal blood levels of any of these electrolytes may be due to a kidney problem; however, some other conditions could alter the salt balance in your blood.
Routine kidney function is one of the most frequently performed blood tests. A kidney function blood test may be conducted for any of the following reasons:
- As part of a general health assessment
- If you have suspected dehydration (low body water content) when the urea level increases
- If you are suspected of having kidney failure
- Before & after starting treatment with a particular medicine, as some medications can cause kidney damage as a side effect. Therefore, kidney function is often checked before & after treatment with certain drugs.
