PRP, or platelet-rich plasma treatment, is a regenerative treatment that uses a concentrated portion of your own blood to stimulate natural repair activity in the skin or scalp.
It is often considered for patients who want gradual improvement in skin quality, fine lines, texture or specific hair concerns. At Bodyvie, we start PRP treatment with a consultation to make sure it is right for your concern, skin condition and medical history.
Using your own platelets
The PRP treatment takes a small amount of your blood and spins it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the platelets. The concentrated plasma is then re-injected into targeted areas of the skin or scalp. Platelets contain natural growth factors that are important for repair and healing.
The goal is to encourage a gradual response of the treated area resulting in a healthier skin or scalp condition over time. PRP does not provide an immediate filler like effect. It’s often chosen for its subtle, progressive enhancement.
When PRP may be considered
PRP may be a solution for patients looking for a natural regenerative alternative. It can be thought of as:
- Dull or tired-looking skin
- Fine lines and premature skin aging
- Texture not even
- Small loss of firmness
- Crepey skin in delicate areas
- Selected hair thinning or scalp problems
Suitability will depend on the area being treated and your individual health profile. If PRP is not the right choice, Bodyvie will discuss other options that may be more appropriate.
Who performs your treatment. All injectable treatments at Bodyvie are carried out by our GMC-registered doctors: Dr Andrew Weber (GMC 2693226), Dr Vadim Corjos (GMC 7822977) and Dr Dara Suite (GMC 7130257). Every treatment begins with a face-to-face consultation with the doctor who will be treating you.
Your assessment before treatment
We begin with a thorough consultation. We look at your skin or scalp, discuss your concerns, and go through your medical history. This is important as PRP uses your own blood, and certain conditions or medications may affect whether treatment is appropriate.
Your practitioner will also explain what PRP can realistically do. The treatment is geared toward slow progress rather than dramatic or quick change.
How PRP is carried out
During the appointment a small sample of blood is taken. This is then put into a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma from the rest of the blood.
The treatment area is cleaned and prepared. A topical numbing cream may be used for comfort. The PRP is injected into the target area via a fine needle or administered using a controlled technique according to the treatment plan.
What to expect afterwards
Following PRP treatment, the area may be red, slightly swollen or tender. You may have small marks or bruising at the injection sites.
Usually these effects clear up in a few days. You may be advised to avoid heat, intensive exercise, alcohol, active skincare or make-up for a short time post treatment.
You will be given clear aftercare instructions by your practitioner before you leave the clinic.
Visible changes over time
PRP results evolve slowly, depending on the treated area’s response. Early freshness or better skin feel are seen by some patients but the major changes generally take several weeks.
For skin concerns, this could mean better texture, hydration and overall condition. Results will vary for hair concerns and a course may be recommended. Maintenance sessions may be recommended, depending on how you respond to treatment and your treatment goals.
Possible side effects and limits
PRP is generally well tolerated, but side effects can occur. These may include bruising, swelling, redness, tenderness, infection or uneven response.
Results vary between patients. PRP may not be suitable for everyone, especially where medical conditions, blood disorders or certain medications are involved. These points will be discussed during consultation.
