Confirmed after consultation
PRP for hair loss is a regenerative treatment that uses your own blood’s platelet-rich plasma to nourish and feed your scalp and hair follicles. It can be considered for selected patients with early thinning hair, reduced hair density or increased shedding.
PRP treatment for hair loss at Bodyvie starts with a consultation. We’ll examine your scalp, hair pattern, medical history and potential causes of thinning to determine if PRP is a good option for you.
Understanding the cause of thinning
There are many reasons for hair loss. This may be due to genetics, hormones, stress, nutrition, medical conditions, medication or changes in overall health. Therefore, PRP is not offered as a routine treatment for all kinds of hair loss.
The first thing you want to do is get to the root of what the concern might be. Sometimes, additional tests or blood work may be recommended before a treatment plan is created.
How PRP supports the scalp
PRP is taken from a small sample of your own blood. The sample is processed and the platelet-rich plasma is separated. It is then injected into the scalp with a fine needle.
Platelets contain growth factors which are involved in healing and tissue repair. For hair treatment, we want to promote the scalp environment and stimulate healthier follicle activity where the follicles are still active.
PRP cannot grow hair in areas where the follicles are no longer functioning. That is why the importance of a proper assessment before treatment is important.
When treatment may be considered
PRP for hair loss may be suitable for patients with early or moderate thinning where the follicles are still present. It may be considered for:
- Gradual hair thinning
- Reduced hair density
- Increased shedding
- Early male or female pattern hair loss
- Weakened hair quality
- Scalp support after clinical assessment
Suitability depends on the type of hair loss, how long it has been present and whether there are underlying medical factors that need to be addressed first.
Scalp review before treatment
Your practitioner will examine your scalp and talk to you about your hair history. We will ask about when the hair loss started, if it was a sudden or gradual change and if there are any associated symptoms.
They will consider your medical history, medication, lifestyle and any previous treatments you may have had. This helps Bodyvie to determine whether PRP is a suitable route, or whether it is better to explore another route first.
What happens during the appointment
During the session a small blood sample is taken. This is then placed into a centrifuge to separate the platelet rich plasma. The scalp is cleaned and PRP is injected with fine needles into targeted areas.
The treatment can be a little uncomfortable but is usually tolerable and normally does not require an anaesthetic. After your treatment, you can usually go home shortly.
The first few days after PRP
Your scalp may feel tender or a little swollen after treatment. There may be mild redness, small marks or sensitivity at the injection site. These effects tend to dissipate quickly.
After treatment you may be told not to wash the hair for a short period of time, or to avoid heat, intensive exercise, alcohol or harsh hair products immediately after treatment. Clear after-care advice will be given before you leave Bodyvie.
Hair changes over time
PRP results are progressive. Changes are not usually seen immediately as hair growth cycles take time.
Some patients may initially experience decreased shedding with progressive improvement in the quality or density of hair. A course of treatments is usually recommended with maintenance sessions depending on response.
Safety and treatment limits
PRP takes your own blood, but there are still potential risks. These can include tenderness, swelling, bruising, infection, temporary shedding or an uneven response.
It may not be suitable for people with certain blood disorders, active scalp infections, or other specific medical conditions. These points will be discussed in consultation.
