The Mirena Coil is an intrauterine system which delivers progesterone into the womb to gently manage some symptoms of menopause and/or act as a contraceptive. The Mirena coil is inserted into the uterus & can stay in place for 3-5 years, effectively alleviating some symptoms of menopause & PMS.

Hormonal Intrauterine Systems for perimenopause and menopause symptoms have become popular as effective hormone replacement therapy treatments.
The Mirena coil is a gentle option to treat the symptoms of perimenopause as part of hormone replacement therapy and act as a contraceptive. It slowly and constantly releases progesterone into the womb to treat some symptoms of perimenopausal and PMS such as heavy bleeding.
The Mirena IUS can also be used alongside an oestrogen based HRT to protect the endometrium. Bodyvie also offers the Jaydess IUD which delivers half the amount of progesterone as the Mirena.
This hormonal IUS is a small, T-shaped piece of flexible plastic that is inserted through the vagina and into the uterus. Once inserted, the IUS can stay in the uterus for 5 for years, effectively preventing pregnancy without impacting future fertility and alleviate symptoms of PMS.
Because the IUS is fitted into the uterus for 5 years it is low-maintenance and other than requiring intermittent checks, can be forgotten about. It is not well known that perimenopausal women have the second-highest rate of unintended pregnancy and the Mirena IUS helps to prevent any unplanned pregnancies.
The slow-released hormonal IUS also helps to make periods lighter, reduce cramps and have few or no side effects. For these reasons, hormonal intrauterine systems for perimenopause symptoms are a beneficial solution.
Hormonal intrauterine systems are a more gentle way of delivering progesterone to the body. As they are long-lasting and inserted into the body, they leave little room for human error and are far easier to maintain compared to taking contraceptive pills at the same time each day.

Menopause
Menopause is a natural condition signalling a change in the woman’s reproductive system as hormone levels change. It is diagnosed following an absence of the menstrual period for 12 months. As oestrogen levels decline, women’s ovaries stop releasing eggs to be fertilised each month until ovulation and menstruation stops completely and women can no longer get pregnant. Menopause is a natural biological process but the physical and psychological symptoms can prove to be disruptive. Fortunately, there are many effective treatments available for menopause management.
Menopause symptoms begin to appear when women reach the ages of 45-55 as menstrual periods become irregular and decline. The average age of menopause is 51. As oestrogen declines, women experience perimenopause for an average of four years before menstruation stops completely when menopause is diagnosed. Early menopause can be caused by medical treatments like hysterectomy and breast cancer treatment such as Tamoxifen, as well as genetics and ovary health.
During this time, months or years leading up to menopause, you will notice physical and mental changes as your hormone levels change. Not only is oestrogen vital for fertility, but it also affects the brain, skin, bones, liver and heart.

The treatment involves inserting the Mirena Coil or Jaydess through the vagina to the uterus. Your doctor will do this in a sterile environment.
The treatment only takes 5-10 minutes. You may feel some cramps after the insertion, but these will subside.
You will only need one treatment to insert the Mirena or Jaydess IUS. You are welcome to have a follow-up appointment to ensure the IUS is correctly placed or not displaced.
After insertion, you do not have to do anything more until the device expires after 3-5 years when it needs to be removed and replaced.
The Mirena & Jaydess IUS is effective immediately if inserted at the time of your menstrual period or after 7 days if insertion occurs at any other time of your cycle.
Please use other forms of protection in this 7 day period if you are using the Mirena or Jaydess as a contraceptive.
