The treatment involves placing the product with a fine cannula rather than a needle, across the lower face, allowing it to be distributed evenly. Poly-L-lactic acid is a biocompatible material long used in medicine. Once placed in the skin it acts as a signal to the fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing collagen. The product itself is gradually absorbed. What remains is the collagen the skin has made in response. Unlike dermal fillers, Julaine is not placed to fill a space or reshape the face. The change comes from rebuilt structure within the skin, and it develops gradually rather than appearing immediately.
Skin collagen peaks somewhere between twenty-five and thirty-four, then falls by roughly one per cent a year for the rest of your life. A biostimulator does not fill a line. It asks your own fibroblasts to make collagen again, which is why it suits people who would rather stay ahead of that decline than chase it.
How well poly-L-lactic acid rebuilds
Juläine is new, but the material it is built on is not. Poly-L-lactic acid has been injected into faces for more than twenty-five years, and the evidence behind it did not come from cosmetic work at all. Its first regulatory approval, granted by the FDA in August 2004, was for facial lipoatrophy in people with HIV, the severe and sometimes near-total loss of facial fat that older antiretroviral drugs could cause. Approval for cosmetic use did not follow until 2009.
That history matters, but the figures need reading carefully. In the VEGA study, fifty patients with HIV-related facial lipoatrophy, whose median facial fat thickness at the outset was zero, gained a mean 6.8mm of total cutaneous thickness, still measurable at ninety-six weeks. That is a large gain because there was a great deal to replace, and it is not the result a cosmetic patient should expect. What it establishes is the more basic point, and the one that does carry over: the material is absorbed, and collagen is laid down in its place.
Those trials used Sculptra, the original poly-L-lactic acid product, not Juläine, and we would not claim otherwise. What they establish is what the material itself can do. Juläine is a newer formulation of the same active ingredient, designed to be easier to place and far easier to live with afterwards.
What carries across to ordinary cosmetic use is more modest and better matched to it. A 2025 review in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal reports that ultrasound typically shows increased dermal thickness within twelve weeks of treatment, and that tissue staining confirms an increase in type I collagen, laid down in denser and better organised bundles than before. That is the change you are paying for, and it builds over months rather than appearing on the day.
Poly-L-lactic acid earned its evidence rebuilding faces that had lost almost everything. Age-related volume and collagen loss is a far gentler version of the same problem.
Who is suitable?
Julaine may suit people whose skin has begun to lose firmness and support, where the face looks flatter or less defined than it did rather than simply more lined. It is often considered after significant weight loss, and by people who would prefer to rebuild their own collagen rather than have volume placed. Dermal fillers remain the better option where a specific hollow or contour needs addressing, and the two are frequently planned together. Suitability is always confirmed during consultation. We review your skin, medical history and treatment goals before recommending any injectable treatment.
Recovery and downtime
Following treatment, some redness, mild swelling or small bruises may occur at the treated area. These reactions are usually temporary and improve within a few days.
Many people resume their usual routine shortly after treatment. Before leaving the clinic, you will receive personalised aftercare advice appropriate to your treatment plan.
There is no massage protocol for you to follow. The doctor gives the treated area a short firm massage as soon as the product is placed, and that is the whole of the aftercare. This is worth knowing if you have researched collagen biostimulators before, because Sculptra requires the patient to follow the five-five-five routine: five minutes of massage, five times a day, for five days, and some practitioners ask for longer. That is twenty-five minutes a day, at five separate points in the day, and it exists to stop the product clumping. Juläine asks none of it. You have the treatment and you carry on with your day.
“I had Juläine myself before we offered it to patients. It is a fine cannula rather than a needle across the lower face, it takes about fifteen minutes, and I went straight back to work afterwards. There is no massage protocol to remember, which for me was the deciding factor.”

Benefits and expected results
Julaine works with the skin’s own repair processes, so change is progressive rather than immediate. The first visible difference is usually noticed at around six weeks and continues to develop through the course of treatment. As new collagen forms, patients typically notice firmer, better-supported skin and improved definition. The aim is a face that has held its structure, not one that looks treated. Benefits of Julaine may include:
- Improved skin firmness
- Better-supported facial structure
- Improved skin elasticity and resilience
- Smoother skin texture
- Subtle softening of fine lines
A course of three sessions, four to six weeks apart, is usually recommended. Results typically last between 12 and 24 months.
The treatment process
Consultation
At Bodyvie, we begin with a consultation to assess your skin and understand your concerns. This helps us determine whether Julaine is appropriate and what you can expect from treatment.
If another approach is more suitable, we will explain your options clearly so you can decide how you would like to proceed.
The procedure
The treatment is placed with a fine cannula rather than a needle, across the lower face. These injections allow the product to be distributed evenly across the treatment area.
The procedure usually takes about fifteen minutes. A numbing cream may be applied beforehand to improve comfort.
Most patients describe the treatment as tolerable, with only mild sensitivity during the injections.
Aftercare
Mild redness or small injection marks may appear shortly after treatment and typically settle within a few days.
Most patients are able to return to normal daily activities soon afterwards. We provide clear aftercare guidance and remain available should questions arise during recovery.
Before and after
Julaine produces gradual improvement in the skin’s firmness and support rather than immediate or dramatic change. The goal is skin that looks stronger and better supported while still appearing natural. Before-and-after photographs may be reviewed during consultation to help illustrate the type of improvement the treatment may achieve. Individual outcomes vary depending on skin condition and response to treatment.
Results and longevity
Results from Julaine tend to develop gradually. Changes tend to develop gradually as the skin responds to treatment.
Some patients benefit from a short course of treatments, followed by occasional maintenance sessions. Your practitioner will discuss an appropriate treatment plan during consultation.
Cost of Julaine of Sweden™
A course of three Juläine sessions is £2,550, which works out at £850 a session. A single session is £950. Prices are the same at our Richmond and Belgravia clinics. Clinics in central London charge up to £1,400 a session for the same treatment.
Most people need three sessions, four to six weeks apart, which is why we price it as a course. A doctor consultation is £50 and is redeemable in full against the cost of your treatment.
A course runs eight to twelve weeks, so starting in September or early October means you will be looking your best through Christmas. Starting in November will not show in time, and we would rather say so.
Full detail is on our Juläine cost page.
Risks and considerations
As with any injectable treatment, Julaine may cause temporary side effects. These can include swelling, redness or mild bruising at the injection sites.
Less common reactions can occur, which is why a thorough consultation is important. During this appointment we discuss potential risks and confirm whether the treatment is appropriate for you.

You can learn more about our medical team on the Bodyvie team page.
Juläine is a doctor-led treatment here. Dr Vadim Corjos treats at both Belgravia and Richmond. Dr Andrew Weber and Dr Dara Suite treat at Richmond. Whoever treats you assesses you first, and will say so if a collagen biostimulator is not what your face actually needs.
If you are weighing Juläine against Sculptra, the two share the same active ingredient but differ in ways that matter in practice. Our comparison of Juläine and Sculptra is honest about where each one is stronger, including the fact that Sculptra has the longer track record.
Treatment is available at Belgravia and at Richmond, at the same price and to the same standard.
Other Biostimulator Treatments
Juléine is one of several biostimulator treatments we offer. We also provide Radiesse Hyperdilute and HArmonyCa, both based on calcium hydroxylapatite. Radiesse Hyperdilute is used to improve the quality and firmness of the neck and décolletage. HArmonyCa combines hyaluronic acid with calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres and is used in the mid and lower face. Your doctor will advise which approach suits your assessment.
Part of our pathways. Juläine is used in Menopause and Skin and in Weight Management and Skin Recovery.
