Cysts are generally harmless fluid-filled lumps under the skin and can be removed for cosmetic purposes.
Cysts are fluid-filled lumps under the skin, and they can be soft to the touch or firm. The fluid in the cyst can be yellow or white. Sometimes, you can notice a small dark plug like a blackhead or blocked hair follicle on the cyst. They are caused because some cells in the skin produce a protein called keratin, which is usually shed with dead skin cells. Still, sometimes, these cells multiply deeper in your skin and form a sac, and they start secreting keratin into the middle of the sac, which forms a thick, yellow paste. Cysts are usually harmless and painless, and they develop slowly. If they become large, they can become uncomfortable. If they are painful, they can be infected. Cyst removal should be carried out by a qualified medical professional, so that the sac is removed properly, the risk of infection and scarring is reduced, and any cellular abnormality is identified. Cyst removals are considered a minor operation. Bodyvie works with The Doctor’s Laboratory where histology is needed, so that any abnormal cells are identified and the diagnosis is confirmed rather than assumed. Removal is carried out by a GMC-registered doctor, with the aim of taking the sac out whole and leaving as neat a scar as the site allows.
SYMPTOMS of Cysts
Fluid-filled lumps on the skin filled with a white or yellow fluid and can vary in size.
CAUSES of Cysts
- Blocked sebaceous or oil gland
- Build-up of dead skin cells
- Hair follicle causing keratin to build-up to create a fluid-filled sac
Prevention of Cysts
Some cysts are difficult to prevent but some tips are to keep your skin clean and exfoliated to remove any build-up of dead skin cells and oil which can block the glands causing cysts.
Treatments for Cysts
Cysts can appear as growths anywhere on the body. While often harmless, they may cause cosmetic concerns or discomfort, but they can be effectively treated at Bodyvie (established in 1999 and recognised as one of London’s original advanced medical and aesthetic clinics).
However, while some cysts may go away of their own accord, they can be unsightly in appearance, making you feel self-conscious. What’s more, when left untreated, some can become infected and painful, and can even leave behind scarring.
The majority of cysts are sebaceous and we are also able to target all types of epidermal and skin cysts from any part of the body. Sebaceous cysts grow beneath your skin and are filled with a fatty substance called sebum, which is a yellow-white colour and fairly solid to the touch. Smooth and round in appearance, they are caused by a build-up of sebum in the hair follicle gland opening, and they can form anywhere where there are hair follicles on your body.
Your cyst removal procedure at Bodyvie will be carried out by Dr Weber in London, who has over 30 years experience and performs these minor operations on a daily basis.
We offer private GP appointments in our state-of-the-art, CQC-registered clinic. You don’t need to be registered with us, have a referral, or live nearby. Our consultations are personalised and of the highest quality.
With over 38 years as a general practitioner, Dr Weber, our medical director, offers a full range of services for all age groups. Dr Weber’s passion for patient care is evident with his attentiveness and years of experience, ensuring a comfortable experience for new and returning patients.
Bodyvie’s private GP appointments are convenient. We can book your appointment around your busy schedule with little to no wait time. This can provide relief when NHS appointments are often rushed with 15 minute appointment times and are booked out for weeks or months.
Our private doctor will work with your NHS Practice/GP to ensure continuity of care for accurate medical notes and history which may help to expedite referrals. Many of our patients work with our private doctor in addition to their existing NHS medical practice.
